Welcome to Class 2 – Autumn Term 2015
This week in Science, we have been investigating which liquids will do the most damage to our teeth. We did this by carrying out a fair enquiry using eggs, as the eggshell represents the enamel on our teeth. We made predictions and will draw some conclusions on Monday when our investigation finishes.
In Topic we have been learning about life in Greek city states, such as Athens and Sparta. We used role play to learn about how these states were ruled. Some were ruled by tyrants but some states developed a democracy that we still see today. The class preferred this way of ruling. We then decided to investigate these states further and started to create an information PowerPoint.
In English we have been looking at prefixes, suffixes and root words. As a class this is something that a few of us have struggled with in the past but we are now all confident in the different meanings of the suffixes and prefixes and we can identify root words with ease.
In R.E we have been discussing The Ten Commandments and their impact on society today and the influence they have on our laws. We had a bit of a debate and discussed which commandment we thought was the most important and why. We had some great discussions and ideas which have been recorded in our R.E Scrapbook.
In topic we learnt about the culture in Greece in 500-300 BC, including the unification of the city-states against the Persian Empire. We learnt about this through role play, understanding that at first the city-states looked out for themselves and didn’t work as part of a team. Soon the city-states learnt how to run a new democratic government together. It was a more organised way involving teamwork and coordination. When the Persians attacked, the Greek army lined up in a long line with their shields overlapping each other. We are really enjoying this topic!
Finally, thank you to everyone who came to see us in the Harvest Festival, we really appreciated the support. The children were excited to bring food in to give to the cause and we also enjoyed looking at the wonderful fruit and vegetable creations.
In English we have been learning about discussion texts. We did this through an agree or disagree lesson where we given statements such as ‘There is life on other planets’ and ‘Pop stars should be paid more than firemen’ etc. We then chose a side and gave reasons. We then looked at some examples of discussion texts and realised that it gives both opinions and must be balanced. On Friday we wrote a discussion text on whether ‘School break times should be longer.’ The children created some fantastic pieces of writing and made sure that they used vocabulary learnt within the week such as ‘Some people argue that’ and ‘However, others believe that’.
In Maths we focussed on short division. This was a tricky concept for some but by the end of the week we got there. Well done Year 3’s on picking this method up so quickly.
In Science we were learning about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We then used the I Pads to access a zoo website where we researched the diets of many animals.
This week has been a busy one! In Science we learnt all about food chains and energy chains. By the end of the lesson we could create an energy chain and label it correctly. This included producer, predator and prey, herbivore, omnivore and carnivore and finally primary consumer and secondary consumer.
On Wednesday it was our Brazil day in which the whole school learnt about Brazil. This is in preparation for myself and Miss Harris as we are travelling to Brasilia on 26th October. As our class topic is Ancient Greece we thought it would be a good idea to research the Ancient Olympics which started in 776 BC in honour of the Greek god Zeus. We used the internet to find out lots of different facts and produced some fabulous information texts. We then looked at the Olympics which will be held in Brazil in 2016. We realised that a lot of sports are still the same and loved finding fun facts. In the afternoon we learnt a little more about Brazilian culture and learnt all about Carnival. We then decided to make our own colourful headdresses and enjoyed listening to the music.
Pictures to follow soon!
In Science this week we have been looking at food webs. Some of us found this a little difficult so we decided to go into the hall and make our own food web practically. We used string to show this and we all discussed where people should go.
This week Miss Bradley was in Brazil with Miss Harris. Class 2 were fantastic for Mrs King and Mrs Pressley. Well done Class 2.
In Science we searched for minibeasts in the school grounds. We used identification charts to see what we had found. We then went back into the class to make a fact file on the minibeasts that we had found.
In Topic we used role play to learn about education in Athens. The children were surprised at how similar some of the subjects were compared to today. Most of the class loved how much sport was taught.
On Friday, the staff were soaked for Children in Need. The children were fantastic, baking cakes, facepainting and painting nails to raise money. Well done everyone!
In English we have been continuing with poetry. We have worked on identifying poetic patterns and have discovered that many poems are different and don’t need to have a specific rule. We have learnt lots of new vocabulary linked to this topic such as stanza, rhyming couplet, free verse, line, rhythm and syllables. The children have used all that they have learnt to create poems based on life in the trenches during WW1. Some of the vocabulary used was fantastic!
In R.E we used the internet to investigate the lives of people who have chosen to follow God’s rules as their code for living. These were people such as Mother Teresa, Dr Barnardo and Corrie Ten Boom. The children then used pages to create an information text on what they had found out.
In Topic we have continued to look at the education system that they used to have. This week we looked at Sparta, and we compared what we learnt with the information we gained last week about Athens. We then decided which education system we liked the most and had prepared for a debate.
In Music we have started our Christmas unit. The children love the style of music and particularly enjoy the rap in the middle. We have been learning different techniques to warm up our bodies and voices before we get started. After learning the song we had a go at using the recorder and the chimes to go with the music. We found the recorder particularly tricky, moving from notes G, A and B. This is something we need to work on, but we will get there Class 2!
This week has been ART, ART, ART! The whole school has participated in a fantastic Art week working with New Light and Bowes Museum. As a class we have learnt many new skills and have had the opportunity to work with some very talented people. Please visit our page on the Art Inspiring Art link for more information and to see some pictures. Thank you to all parents who came in to support us this week.
In English this week we have been focusing on some areas in SPAG. In particular, we looked at prepositions, main clauses and subordinate clauses and punctuating direct speech with inverted commas. After that earlier in the week, we used our Thursday and Friday session to do some extended writing. We took inspiration from the 2014 John Lewis advert with Monty the penguin. On Thursday the children used information given to them to create a non-chronological report on the Adelie penguin. On Friday we decided to use the information gained to help us write a persuasive letter to Father Christmas, asking for a friend for Monty. Some of the children’s writing was fantastic and hopefully some examples will follow soon …
In Maths we have been revising place value. We now have a display that we work on every day where children use their place value skills to answer questions on a four digit number. Keep it up Class 2! On Thursday and Friday we worked on our Shape, Space and Measure lesson where we investigated nets of 3D shapes. We had a go at creating our own 3D shapes and then opening them up to create a net. We then drew our nets in order to create a little Christmas box.
This week we have been doing a lot of assessments. It has been a little stressful as they were quite difficult but well done Class 2 and we will work on the things we struggled with next term.
In P.E we used the apparatus in our gymnastic lesson. We learnt about carrying the apparatus safely and then were put into groups. The children needed to think of a balance that they could hold, how they travel from one end to the other and finally how they landed. The children really enjoyed this lesson and we saw some excellent technique.
In Topic we used atlases and I pads to create a fact file on the geography of Greece. We used the atlases to locate Greece, the bordering countries, the bordering seas and oceans and to also identify the terrain. We then used the I pads to discover other geographical features, such as the weather. We also discovered the languages spoken and the major religions. Well done Class 2!
